Guest Speaker: Emma Barkus - from UOW
Dr Emma Barkus completed her undergraduate degree in psychology at Manchester Metropolitan University and went on to complete her PhD there in collaboration with the University of Manchester. Her PhD was concerned with identifying people from the general population who are prone to auditory hallucinations.
Dr Barkus started her academic role at the University of Wollongong in March 2010. Dr Barkus has developed a program of research concerned with risk factors for psychosis including the efficiency of thinking processes, stress, alcohol, cannabis use, genetics and stable factors such as personality. Her work converges on the factors which exacerbate or ameliorate risk for serious mental health disorders.
Dr Barkus has also extended this work to consider factors which prevent people from seeking help as their mental health deteriorates including post traumatic stress.
Speaker's Topic: The weight of experience: Post traumatic stress in our community
At this event we will be supporting The Cancer Council's Dancing with the Stars fundraiser with the charity raffle - raffle tickets are $5 each or 3 for $10.
